UW Wireless Networks

Information Technology provides wireless data network access in most campus locations through five different network options:

  • UWyo – recommended wireless network for UW students, faculty, and staff. Connect with these instructions:Connect with an Android device or Connect with an iOS device
  • UWguest – recommended network for UW guests. Connect with these instructions: Connect to UW Guest
  • Eduroam - recommended for UW students, faculty, staff, and members of cooperating institutions.  Connect with these instructions: Connect to Eduroam
  • UWresnet-iot - This network is only available in residence halls and apartments. This network is designed to allow devices that do not support enterprise authentication to connect to wireless securely. This network should only be used for personal smart tvs, video game consoles, smart speakers, etc. Connect with these instructions: Connect IoT device to UWresnet-iot wireless network
  • UWyo-iot - This network is designed to allow devices that do not support enterprise authentication to connect to wireless securely. This network is designed for university owned devices like smart TVs, temperature sensors, printers, etc. Users can request access to this network here: Register wireless IoT device for Campus Buildings

Minimum Operating System Requirements

To protect the campus community the UW Network Security Team limits those connecting to wireless.  The device attempting to connect must be running a supported operating system.  Supported operating systems can be found here...

Windows - General rule last two service packs
Mac - General rule last three versions
Linux
iOS - General rule last three versions
Android - General rule last five versions

UWyo is a network that requires UW credientials.  Authentication is very secure and all data that transits over the wireless network is encrypted. You can authenticate via your normal UW username and password. Once properly configured, you can access the wireless network automatically without having to enter a username or password. UWyo offers network services equivalent to wired ports on the UW data network.

UWguest is an open network. Users authenticate by selecting an account to connect with such as Google or Facebook or receiving a text message with a code to enter into the portal. Once authenticated, users can access the public data network – but cannot access private UW resources that are behind the UW firewall, including email, unless they subsequently create a VPN connection back into UW. Data is not encrypted unless users establish a VPN connection.

Eduroam is a network that requires authentication from UW or any participating insitution. A list of participating institutions can be found here, https://www.eduroam.org/?p=where. Authentication is very secure and all data that transits over the wireless network is encrypted.  Once properly configured, you can access the wireless network automatically without having to enter a username or password. UWyo offers network services equivalent to wired ports on the UW data network.
