I want to request SAS software

Introduction

Information Technology provides SAS software for all current UW faculty, staff and students.  The options available depend on the purpose that SAS will be used for.

SAS for Research or Teaching Purposes

There are several resources on this page for SAS software. Please read the descriptions to determine which option is right for you, your research, or your class.

Free University Edition

The University Edition software offering, despite the name, is available for use by any learner anywhere in the world for non-commercial use. It can be used for academic research and teaching purposes. It is not for use for administrative purposes. University Edition runs within a virtual machine, therefore it will run on PCs, Macs and Linux operating systems.

This option does not require an internet connection. SAS University Edition is downloaded and installed on your computer.

University Edition has the new SAS Studio interface which allows users to write code or utilize a set of guided tasks which will write the code for you for a pre-determined set of analyses. There are free video tutorials and teaching materials to introduce you to this interface.

These e-learning courses work in conjunction with SAS University Edition.

There are four SAS products under University Edition; BASE SAS, SAS/STAT, SAS/IML and Access to PC Files. All of these are full versions of the products and are not limited or “student” versions. The size of the data you can analyze depends on the storage and memory of the machine on which it runs since it is running locally.

If you want to do any time series analysis, forecasting, integrating with R, operations research, or decision sciences, University Edition is not the right solution for you.

Free SAS OnDemand for Academics

SAS provides access to this free product for non-commercial learning activities. OnDemand is not available for administrative use.

SAS Studio – which is available through SAS OnDemand for Academics – is cloud based access to SAS. As this is cloud access and not downloadable, learners have access to four additional pieces of SAS software with this offering. SAS/ETS(econometric time series), SAS/OR (operations research), SAS/QC (quality control),SAS/Graph (more configurable graphing options) and the high performance procedures are available through this offering. The same tutorials and free e-learning are available as well.

SAS OnDemand requires internet connectivity since it is a cloud solution.

There is a 5 GB file size limitation. The data is stored in the cloud. If your research or grant restricts your data to be stored locally on UW resources, SAS OnDemand is not the right solution for you. The cloud servers are Unix, and data naming is case sensitive.

Also available through SAS OnDemand for Academics is access to SAS Enterprise Miner, SAS Forecast Server and SAS Enterprise Guide. These are available for academic teaching or for student research. This requires a professor to set up a course space and invite students to register for access.

Professors will receive an email one day after registering a course space for Enterprise Miner using SAS OnDemand for Academics with an additional two free e-learning courses.

The two e-learning courses specific to SAS Enterprise Miner are Applied Analytics using SAS Enterprise Miner and Rapid Predicative Modeling for the Business Analyst. The email provided to the professor will contain the unique access codes required for the Enterprise Miner e-Learning.

Enterprise Guide will require you to download a thin client, which can only be run on the Windows operating system (whether it is on a PC or Mac). Forecast Server and Enterprise Miner do not require a download; however they do require it run on a computer that runs JRE (Java Runtime Environment).

Here is the link to the support site that has the new registration instructions:http://support.sas.com/ondemand/steps.html
