I want to request SPSS software.

Introduction

Information Technology provides SPSS to UW departments for installation on UW owned computers for academic teaching and research use only.

SPSS includes the following:

  • SPSS Base
  • SPSS Advanced Models
  • SPSS Regression Models

Available to

This is available to faculty, staff, and students.

Procedure

If you would like to request SPSS, please click "Request Software," and fill out form with appropriate infromation.  Granting access to this software is a manual process, so it will not happen instantly and will only be processed during business hours.

Individuals can install the software either from the UW network or by checking out the CD from the Information Technology Center. To check out a CD from the Information Technology Front Desk, stop by during normal business hours. Call the Front Desk at 766-3686 for information on checking out the software and to verify that a copy is available.

Cost

IT wants to give departments plenty of notice regarding SPSS costs they will incur beginning in FY 17 (July 1, 2016). In the past, Information Technology has paid a significant majority of the costs for SPSS Statistics. Unfortunately, the price for this software continues to have a hefty increase every year. IT can no longer absorb the rising cost.

IT will cover the cost of SPSS Statistics through June 30, 2016. However, beginning in FY17, departments wanting to continue the use of SPSS will be billed for the software on a pro-rated basis. The estimated cost beginning July 1, 2016, will be $215 per user, per device, for any installation of SPSS Statistics from the UW network or from the CD. Departments should plan on an estimated 10 – 15% increase per year thereafter. Information Technology and the Central Student Technology Committee will continue to pay for a portion of the SPSS subscription for use in the UWStudent Computer Labs.

IT understands and appreciates the financial impact to departments. We hope giving advanced notice will provide sufficient time for departments to develop their budgets to include the expense.

There are various ways to license IBM SPSS Statistics for institutional administrative use (use that is not directly related to teaching or research). Depending on the analysis that an individual is doing the one-time cost can be anywhere from about $3,500 - $7,500 with the recurring annual costs for maintenance being between $700 - $1,500. This license type would not expire each year.

If SPSS needs to be used on a personally owned computer, it can be purchased for about $250 per year.
