How to install Oracle Virtual Box

Introduction

Oracle VirtualBox allows the creation and management of virtual machines.

Download VirtualBox and the accompanying Extension Pack (which among other things provides support for USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices) from:

https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Save to the same location on the pc. Make sure the version of the Extension Pack is the same version as the version of Virtual Box. The version used in these instructions is 7.2.14, so the main installer file name is: 

VirtualBox-7.2.14-174565-Win.exe (Windows)

VirtualBox-7.2.14-174565-OSX.dmg (MacOS)

and the extension pack is named:

Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-7.2.14.vbox-extpack

 

Procedure

Right-click on the installer in the folder and select Run as administrator. On the first installer screen, click Next.

Accept the terms and conditions. Click on Next in the first Custom Setup screen:

Click on Yes in the Network Interfaces dialog box. If you are prompted to install dependencies, click Yes.

Select or deselect features as desired in the second Custom Setup screen; click on Next when finished.

Click on Install in the Ready to Install dialog box.

Make sure Start Oracle VM VirtualBox… is checked when done so as to install the Extension Pack then click on Finish and VirtualBox will start.

Double click on the extension pack file in the folder it was downloaded to; this will start its installation to VirtualBox. Click on Install.

Scroll to the end of the VirtualBox License agreement and click on I AgreeThe Extension Pack will be install; click on Ok when done.

 

In VirtualBox, click on File and then Check for updates to install any updates it finds.

Procedure - MacOS

Step 1

Click on the downloaded installer. In the resulting pop-up, double click the VirtualBox.pkg icon.

Step 2

Click Continue.

Step 3

Make your selection for where you would like the application to install (just your user, all users, or another disk).

Step 4

Click Install when you are satisfied with your selections. You will need to enter your Mac admin account password for the installation to continue. The install will complete itself. Close out of the installer when it finishes.

Step 5

To install the extension pack, follow the same steps as shown at the end of the Windows installation.
