How to Restore files on Isilon storage cluster (Warehouse)

Procedure

  1. Open the folder that contained the files you wish to restore. In the examples, Robocopy_results is the name of the directory.
     
  2. Right-click any open area in the window, and select "Properties" from the context menu.
     
  3. Select the "Previous Versions" tab in the "Properties" dialog.

  4. Select the Previous Version corresponding to a time before the time the file you wish to restore was lost.
     
  5. To restore a file:
    1. Clicking "Open" will open a file explorer with the contents of the directory at the time of the snapshot. Note that the file system path will have the snapshot time appended to it. This may help distinguish the live files from the snapshot data.You can then drag the file(s) you need to restore to a location of your choosing.
    2. "Copy..." will allow you to copy the entire folder to a new location.
    3. "Restore..." will overwrite the current folder with the snapshotted directory.

How to Restore files on Isilon storage cluster for Linux

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the folder that contained the files you wish to restore.
     
  2. If you are using a graphical file browser, append '/.snapshot' to the end of the filesystem path. If you are using terminal, simply 'cd .snapshot'
    1. .snapshot is well hidden, and will not appear even if you use 'ls -la' in the terminal, or select the "Show hidden files" or similar option in your file browser.
    2. If you are using a file browser that doesn't give you an editable filesystem path by default, CTRL+L may allow you to edit the filesystem path.

  3. You should see a number of directories named with the date and time of the snapshot. Change into the directory named with the timestamp before the file was lost.

  4. The file(s) to be restored can be copied to a location of your choosing.
     

How to Restore files on Isilon storage cluster for OS X

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the directory that contains the file(s) you wish to restore.
    • On OS X 10.8 and 10.9, you may need to force SMBv1. When mounting the share, use cifs://uw-bulk.uwyo.edu/<sharename> rather than smb://...
    • On OS X 10.8 and 10.9, you will also probably need to do file restores via terminal rather than Finder.
    • On OS X 10.10, Finder appears to work using the 'Go to Folder...' dialog.

  2. Change directory to .snapshot. If using Finder, you will need to use ⇧⌘G for 'Go to Folder...'. Remember to provide the absolute path to the .snapshot folder starting with /Volumes/<sharename>/...
     
  3. You should see a number of directories named with the data and time of the snapshot. Change into the directory named with the timestamp before the file was lost.
     
  4. The file(s) to be restored can be copied to a location of your choosing.
