Restoring iOS Devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) To Factory Defaults

Please be aware that this process will completely and irreversibly erase the data on your iOS device!

Putting the device into Recovery mode.

Recovery Mode Steps

  1. Turn the device completely off and disconnect it from cable/dock.
  2. Hold down the home button.
  3. While holding down the home button connect to a computer with a cable (easiest) or dock.
  4. Keep holding down the home button until you see a connect-to-itunes screen You are now in recovery mode.

If your goal is to restore the iOS device to factory defaults for a new user or a new setup, you should be set. Continue setting up the device as you would with if it were new. If you wish to restore your iOS device from another backup, please continue with the steps below.

Restoring your iOS device from a backup.

  1. Connect your device to your computer.
  2. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes. Select the Summary tab, and click the Restore button.
  3. Click Restore.
  4. After a restore, the iOS device restarts. You should then see "Slide to set up". Follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant.
  5. If needed, restore your device from a previous backup.

If Recovery mode failed to restore the iOS Device to its default settings, you can use DFU mode to accomplish the same goal. However, DFU mode will erase the device completely and can be a bit tricker. The strong suggestion is only to use DFU mode if Recovery mode has already failed.

Entering DFU mode.

DFU Mode Steps

  1. Hold the Power Button (3 secs)
  2. Continue holding the power button and also hold the home button (15 secs)
  3. Release the power button while continuing to hold the home button (10 secs)
  4. Your device should prompt with the "Connect to iTunes Screen"

From here you should be able to set up the device as new or if desired, by following the backup restoration process above.
