Set Permissions On A Warehouse Drive

Introduction

This article covers the process of modifying access permissions on UW Warehouse drives, and other network folders. To set or modify file permission on a Warehouse Drive, your account must already have "Full Control" permissions for the drive. Modifying user permissions on Warehouse is only available on Windows computers. If you do not have access to a Windows computer and would like to modify the permissions on a Warehouse drive you have "Full Control" access to, email userhelp@uwyo.edu with the following information:

-The username of the person who needs access.

-Full path of the Warehouse drive/folder they need access to.

-The level of access that they require (Info about available access levels is shown in step 7 below).

These steps cover the process for managing access to the an entire warehouse drive. However, the same process can be applied for setting permissions on individual folders inside a warehouse drive as well. If you have questions about advanced Warehouse access management, please email userhelp@uwyo.edu.

Procedure

  1. Open File Explorer. Right click the warehouse drive in the navigation pane on the left side of the window, then select Properties.

  1. Go to the Security tab in the properties window.
  2. Click Edit.

  1. Click the Add button. If the user already has some level of access to the drive, and you want to modify their level access, skip to step 7
  2. Type the username(s) you would like to add, then click Check Names. If multiple users are found with similar user names, it will ask you to select the correct one from the list.

  1. Click OK.
  2. Select the user from the list to modify their access level.

There are 3 basic levels of access:

Read/Write: User can view, edit, create, and delete any file. (Most Common)

Read Only: User can only view files.

Full Control: User can view, edit, and modify any file of folder. Additionally, they can manage access to the warehouse drive, including adding and removing users and modifying access permissions.

For Read/Write: Check the Allow boxes for Modify, Read & Execute, List contents, Read, and Write as shown below.

For Read Only: Check the Allow boxes for Read & Execute, List contents, Read.

For Full Control: Check the Allow box next to Full Control. All other boxes will automatically select.

8. Click Apply, the modified permissions will then begin applying to all folder and files in the network drive. This step can take a while to complete. Do not click cancel, close the Window, or turn off your computer until this process completes. This window will close automatically when finished.

9. After the permissions are set, click OK to close the permissions window. Click OK again to close the properties window.
