Microsoft Local Administrator Password Solution (LAPS)

What is Microsoft LAPS?

Microsoft LAPS is a password management solution provided by Microsoft that allows local Administrator passwords for domain joined computers to be securely stored and managed by select groups of individuals.

Is LAPS installed on my computer?

LAPS is installed on all domain joined Windows desktops.  New and existing images will have LAPS installed by default.

Why is LAPS installed on my computer?

Microsoft LAPS provides a number of security features and industry best standards.  Features such as password complexity, expiration, access, and encryption help to secure users’ workstations and keep the campus network safe.

What if I need to login as Administrator?

Users are encouraged to never use the local Windows accounts but rather to request access to install software with their UWYO domain account.  Elevated privileges can be requested from the IT Help Desk at 766-HELP (4357), option 1 or email userhelp@uwyo.edu.

Will domain users who are Administrators be impacted?

Microsoft LAPS does not impact domain users in the Administrators group on their Windows workstations.
