Upgrading Java on a PC:
1.) Go to your start menu and then select the control panel option.
In the view by setting at the top, select large icons from the drop down if it is not already selected.
2.) Select the Java (32-bit) control panel icon. This will bring up the Java control panel in a new window.
3.) In the Java control panel, click on the update tab
4.) Then click the button at the bottom to update now.
5.) This will bring up the Java Setup window. Select the update > button.
6.) User Account Control may warn about the update. Select Yes to continue.
7.) The installer will begin the download. At this time, the java set up may provide additional "recommended offers" (for example, changing your homepage, or installing a browser helper/toolbar). If available, select the option in which you do NOT update browser settings, and uncheck any boxes indicating you install a toolbar and change your default search provider. Then click Next>.
8.) Java will now install. If you are prompted to uninstall any out-of-date java versions, you should uninstall unless they are necessary for other programs on your computer to run. (Usually most programs will be compatible with the latest version of java but please check with your UW IT consultant if you are unsure). If you're ready to uninstall older versions of java, click "uninstall".
Once older versions are uninstalled, click Next.
10.) Leave the box checked to restore java security prompts then hit Next.
11.) Java should now be successfully installed and you may close the installer. Java will now direct you to their webpage to verify that you have installed the most current version. Click the button on the webpage to verify. You will likely be prompted to activate java in the window if you are in Firefox. Regardless of browser you will be asked if you'd like to run the java detection software. Click "run".
