1. What is Two-Factor Authentication?

Two-factor authentication strengthens access security by requiring two methods to verify your identity.  These methods can include something you know -- like a username and password, plus something you have -- like a smartphone app to approve authentication requests.

  • For more information please visit the Duo User Guide, HERE

Laptop with text fields, smartphone with a key, and a checkmark, connected by arrows.

You may also try out the Duo Mobile Universal Prompt Demo on the official Duo Webpage, HERE

2. Why Is The University Of Wyoming Using Two-Factor Authentication?

Two-factor authentication helps fight against phishing, social engineering and password brute force attacks and helps to secure your logins from attackers exploiting weak or stolen credentials.

  • Due to the number of attempted and successful account compromises UW has increased account security by putting in two factor to protect your personal data and institutional systems.

3. What Type Of Devices May Be Enrolled?

You may use the following devices for the second authentication step:

  • Smartphones (i.e., Android or iPhone)

  • Tablets (i.e., Samsung, iPad, etc...)

  • Digital Security Key (i.e., Yubikey Fob)

4. Who Is Expected/Eligible To Use Two-Factor Authentication?

All faculty, staff, students and affiliates are required to use two-factor authentication to access University resources from off campus.

  • To increase your account security, the University of Wyoming is augmenting the thing you "know" (your username and password) with a Two-Factor Authentication platform called Duo security, which allows you to use a mobile phone app and other capabilities to protect your personal data and institutional systems you use.

5. Unable To Use The Duo Mobile Application?

You may use a Yubikey for the second authentication step

  • MUST be Active UW Faculty/Staff or UW Student

  • May purchase your own Yubikey, or request one from the UWIT Help Desk. If you obtain one from UWIT, and it is broken or lost; you are responsible for purchasing a replacement.
