QR codes: Generating, usage, and caution

QR codes are two dimensional graphical representations of data points.

Similar to the bar codes on goods and produce, a QR code can be used to contain much more information and is commonly implemented to redirect QR code readers to websites, files, geographical locations, or authenticating to a service or network.

While QR codes are now very common and widely used, Information Technology cautions people to be wary of scanning codes especially if the code comes from an un-trusted source.  The code may come from a malicious agent and can redirect the reader to unknown or dangerous website.

There are numerous and varying methods to creating QR codes.  Some services charge a fee, while others are free to use.

For example, if you are using the Microsoft Edge web browser, simply navigate to the page you wish to create your QR code for,  Right-mouse click anywhere on that page (but not upon a graphic or photo, as that will create a QR for that graphic) and choose, Create QR Code,

Edge will generate the QR code as a graphic you can copy to another document or print.  Please double check the address listed on the code description to ensure it is directing to the correct address.

Another method is to use a third-party utility, such as the Adobe QR code generator.

When you enter in the web site address, the code generator will display the QR code for you. you can then download it for use in documents or printing.  The Adobe code generator has some nicer functions that allow for changing the dot style or color.
