As of June 2022, there have been several vulnerabilities identified in Owl devices allowing exploits to find devices and access sensitive data and access to network. UW IT recommends alternatives to the Meeting Owl hardware. If alternatives are unavailable, UW IT recommends patching firmware on the Owl device as soon as possible.
The Meeting Owl App for desktop requires Meeting Owl Pro software version 3.4.0.21 or above. You must update your Owl’s software using the mobile application if your owl is running a version older than 3.4.21.
To download the Meeting Owl App for desktop, search for “Meeting Owl” in the Windows or Apple store.
- Once the software is downloaded, plug in your Owl’s power adapter and wait until Owl’s eyes stop pulsing and you hear a hoot.
- Plug the Owl's USB cable into the computer on which you've downloaded the Owl App for desktop software.
- If the Meeting Owl App for desktop says “Owl update available”, click on the banner. Otherwise, you are all set! No update is available.
- Ensure you are connected to Wi-Fi in order to receive the software update:
- Open the mobile app and select your Owl from the Nearby Owls list.
- Select About your Owl.
- Ensure your Wi-Fi network is listed next to Wi-Fi, and Internet is available.
- Select Update Now to update your Owl’s software. This update will take about 15 minutes to one hour even if the app says it only takes about 15 minutes. You will be able to use your Owl once the update is complete and your Owl has rebooted.
- You will see a progress bar letting you know the status of your update.
- Owl will reboot when the update is complete. Owl’s eyes will pulse, and when it is ready to use, the eyes will stop pulsing and you will hear a special hoot.
