Windows 10 at UW

Windows 10 at UW

Microsoft officially released Windows 10 at the end of July, 2015. These pages will provide UW customers with information about the current state of Information Technology’s evaluation of Windows 10 Enterprise.

We invite readers to review the sections below to understand IT’s position regarding Windows 10 Enterprise. IT will continue to install and support Windows 8.1. Support for Windows 7 ends January 14, 2020.

Evaluation and Support

Information Technology recognizes the challenges and opportunities that Windows 10 will bring and want to ensure that the end-user experience is a positive one. IT staff have been testing UW administrative applications and centrally provided productivity software for use on university owned computers. Some software and hardware vendors may not yet fully support their products on the Windows 10 operating system; the vendor’s website should be consulted for further information.

Software Compatibility

Moving to the Windows 10 platform may involve numerous changes. New releases of various software applications may be necessary .

Windows 10 introduces a new web browser, called Edge, which is incompatible with some UW web based administrative applications. Internet Explorer (IE) should be used instead.

Departmental Purchases of Computers

IT Computer Sales will continue to sell new computers with the least expensive operating system – Windows 10 Home Edition. IT supported computers will receive the normal UW Windows 10 image.  All official UW images will include standard productivity software pre-installed.

All university owned computers will be eligible to upgrade to 10 at no additional cost under the Microsoft Campus Agreement after it is fully supported.

Personal Use

Eligible students are able to obtain the Windows 10 Education edition free of charge through a third party partner. Students can download the software by going to the UW Student Software page, and clicking on the Kivuto OnTheHub link. Work At Home (employee) customers will have an opportunity to obtain and install Windows 10 earlier than departments – perhaps as early as October 2015*.

*Please keep in mind, Information Technology cannot provide support for the installation, configuration, or troubleshooting of Windows 7 upgrades on personally-owned computers. As with any upgrade, all critical data should be backed up before proceeding.
