Introduction

Note that these instructions are only for connecting to the share in order to add or remove files, not for viewing the web page/site.

Procedure

Using a Windows Machine:

  1. Click the Start button at the lower left of the Windows screen.

  2. The Search programs and files box will appear.

  3. In the Search programs and files box enter the share path in the format \\server name\share root folder$\client folder
    You need to know your server name, share root folder, and the share client folder to gain access.
    • The server name is the server in which your website is located (Boothill).
    • The share root folder is the primary location for all of Geology graduate student website content (GeoWeb$\GGstudent).
    • The client folder is your specific content, based upon your domain username (Helper1).
       
    A complete path would look like this: \\boothill.uwyo.edu\GeoWeb$\GGstudent\Helper1. Hit the Enter key.
     
  4. You must include all three portions of the path to access your content information. The $ must be included on the root folder. The security is set so you can only see your specific content and no other, so if you try to navigate to the root folder (i.e.\\boothill\GeoWeb$) you will be denied access.
     

Using an OS X Machine:

  1. From the Finder, click Go, then Connect to server, or press cmd-K to bring up the Connect to Server window.
     
  2. In the Server Address field of the Connect to Server window, enter the share path in the format smb://server name/share root folder$/GGstudent client folder. You need to know your server name, share root folder and the share client folder for access.
    • The server name is the server in which your website is located (Boothill).
    • The share root folder is the primary location for all of Geology graduate student website content (GeoWeb$/GGstudent).
    • The client folder is your specific content, based upon your domain username (Helper1).
       
    A complete path would look like this: smb://boothill.uwyo.edu/GeoWeb$/GGstudent/Helper1.

  3. If you want to add the link as a favorite, click the + button, otherwise click Connect.

Using an Linux Machine (CentOS):

  1. In the menu bar, click Places, then Connect to Server to bring up the Connect to Server window.
     
  2. In the Service type dropdown menu, select Windows share
    Note: the available fields in the Connect to Server window are dependent upon the selected service type.

  3. Fill out the rest of the Connect to Server fields as below:

    Server: boothill.uwyo.edu
    Share: GeoWeb$
    Folder: ggstudent
    User Name: your username
    Domain Name: uwyo

  4. Click Connect.
    Note: in Linux there are many ways of doing this, not all of which will work for every flavor of Linux.
