Backing up your Windows Machine using Windows Backup

Body

Backups should be done either to network storage or an external backup.  UWIT recommends using windows backup to back up your computer.

To Back up using windows backup do the following:

Open Control Panel

Click on System and Security

Click on Backup and Restore (Windows 7)

On the left pane, click “Create a system image” link.

Under “Where do you want to save the backup?” select the On a hard disk option.

Using the “on a hard disk” drop-down menu, select the location to save the backup.

Select any drives you want to include on the backup.  Usually just selecting C: system is sufficient but if you have additional drives on your computer in which you store data you will want to check those as well.

Click the next button

Click the Start backup button.

Once you complete the steps, the tool will proceed to create a backup of your device and everything on your main hard drive and system reserved partitions.  As the process completes, you'll see a prompt asking you to create a system repair disc, which you can use to restore a backup in case that your device isn't able to start correctly. However, you can skip this option, because you can use a bootable USB flash drive to access the recovery options and we can help you out with this in IT if it is ever necessary.  The backup may take several hours depending on how large a drive you have and how much data you keep on your computer.
