Junk email settings in Office 365 and Outlook on the Web

Summary

No one likes spam or junk email. The Outlook Junk Email Filter doesn’t stop delivery of junk email messages, but does the next best thing—it moves suspected spam to the Junk Email folder.

Body

Overview of the Junk Email Filter

Applies To: Outlook for Microsoft 365 (Windows), Outlook on the web

No one likes spam or junk email. The Outlook Junk Email Filter helps reduce unwanted email by automatically moving suspected spam to your Junk Email folder. While the Junk Email Filter cannot prevent all unwanted messages from reaching your mailbox, it helps keep your Inbox organized by separating suspected spam from legitimate email.

Microsoft 365 also uses Exchange Online Protection (EOP) to scan incoming email before it reaches your mailbox. As a result, some unwanted messages may be delivered to your Junk Email folder, while higher-risk messages may be quarantined before they appear in Outlook.

Tip: Review your Junk Email folder regularly to ensure legitimate messages have not been incorrectly classified as junk.

Mark a Message as Not Junk

If a legitimate email has been moved to your Junk Email folder:

  1. Open the Junk Email folder.
  2. Select the message.
  3. On the Home tab, select Junk > Not Junk.
  4. Follow any prompts to trust the sender if appropriate.

The message will be moved back to your Inbox.

Change Junk Email Filter Settings

You can customize how Outlook handles suspected junk email.

To change your Junk Email settings:

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Select the Home tab.
  3. Select Junk > Junk Email Options.
  4. Choose the filtering level that best meets your needs.

The Junk Email Options window also allows you to manage your:

  • Safe Senders
  • Safe Recipients
  • Blocked Senders
  • International settings

If you need instructions for allowing or blocking specific senders, see the UWIT Knowledge Base article:

Can't Find an Expected Email?

If an expected email is not in your Inbox or Junk Email folder, it may have been quarantined by Microsoft 365 before it reached Outlook.

For instructions on viewing and releasing quarantined messages, see the UWIT Knowledge Base article:
