Introduction 

The University allows authorized administrators of a distribution list to manage certain mailing list settings, including the maximum message size and whether automatic replies are permitted. This article provides step-by-step instructions for updating these settings through the Distribution List Admin Portal.

Maximum Message Size 

Step 1: Navigate to https://lists.uwyo.edu/mailman/admin/ListName to open the distribution list's admin page. Here ensure you log-in by entering the lists password 

  • Note: ListName should be replaced with the name of your distribution list

Step 2: Once you are logged-in, the General Options Section should appear. Here, scroll down and navigate to the "Additional settings" section.

Here, navigate to the "Maximum length in kilobytes (KB) of a message body. Use 0 for no limit":   

  • Change the limit to something suitable, or enter 0 for no limit. 

  • NOTE: There is a sending limit of 35MB which is imposed on all university of Wyoming accounts by the sending client server.

Once all desired changes are made, select "Submit Your Changes" to complete the process

Automatic Replies 

The University recommends configuring distribution lists to prevent automatic replies from being posted. However, the decision to allow or block automatic replies is ultimately at the discretion of each distribution list's administrators.

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for configuring your distribution list to either prevent or allow automatic replies.

Preventing Automatic Replies From Posting 

Step 1: Navigate to https://lists.uwyo.edu/mailman/admin/ListName to open the distribution list's admin page. Here ensure you log-in by entering the lists password 

  • Note: ListName should be replaced with the name of your distribution list

Step 2: Once you have signed in, the General Options page will appear. From here, navigate to the "Privacy Options" section, then to "Spam filters"

Step 3: Once in the Spam filters section, ensure the sections are filled out like the following:

  • Spam Filter Regexp Textbox: Should have Subject.*Automatic Reply.* as the input

  • Action: Ensure you are selecting "Discard" 

Once all desired changes are made, select "Submit Your Changes" to complete the process

Step 4: Once in the Spam Filter Rule 1 is filled out, Select "Add new item..." and this will open the "Spam Filter Rule 2" section, here ensure you fill out the section as the following:

  • Spam Filter Regexp Textbox: Should have Subject.*Automatic reply.* as the input

  • Action: Ensure you are selecting "Discard" 

Once all desired changes are made, select "Submit Your Changes" to complete the process

Allowing Automatic Replies From Posting 

Step 1: Navigate to https://lists.uwyo.edu/mailman/admin/ListName to open the distribution list's admin page. Here ensure you log-in by entering the lists password 

  • Note: ListName should be replaced with the name of your distribution list

Step 2: Once you have signed in, the General Options page will appear. From here, navigate to the "Privacy Options" section, then to "Spam filters"

Step 3: In the Spam Filters section, locate the spam filter rule that is blocking automatic replies. In the Spam Filter Regexp section, look for either of the following entries:

  • Subject.*Automatic Reply.*

  • Subject.*Automatic reply.*

After locating the rule, select "Delete" next to the corresponding Spam Filter Rule # to remove it.
