How to install and use Remote Desktop on Chromebooks

Remote Desktop is a means of connecting to your UW work computer from off campus and directly accessing your files and programs. This document covers the installation and use of an app from Microsoft available at the Google Play Store. Though there are other remote desktop apps, the one from Microsoft is free and works well with Windows computers.

Note – the Google Play Store requires either a Google account or a gmail account to download applications. It can be accessed via the web or by using the chromebook’s native store app. This document uses the web site approach.

Installing Remote Desktop

1. Visit the Google Play Store: https://play.google.com/store

2. Enter in the search terms Microsoft Remote Desktop :

3. It may be the case that Microsoft has two entries in the search listing; one will be a Preview or early release of a version in testing. Check each and be sure to select the one that does NOT say Preview.

4. Click on the Install button after selecting the correct entry:

5. Click on Install to confirm installation. You may be asked to verify your account information by entering the password to your google or gmail account.

6. A second confirmation to proceed request follows; click on OK:

7. An information message will appear in the lower right of the screen upon completion:

Using Remote Desktop

Note If off campus, Pulse Secure must be installed and used first.

1. Look for and click on the Remote Desktop icon in the listing of the chromebook’s apps:

2. Profiles must be created for any computer you want to remote to. Click on the plus sign in the upper right and then click on entry titled Desktop:

3. Enter in the name or IP number of the computer to connect to and click on SAVE:

4. Click on the profile to initiate the connection:

5. Remote Desktop will display the progress:

6. Click on CONNECT if prompted about certificate verification to complete the connection:

7. Enter your UW username and password when prompted and click on CONNECT:

8. To end the connection, move the mouse to the top of the screen to access the drop down menu bar and click on the X:
